## Who we are

3D Print Pittsburgh is a custom 3D printing and product development shop created in 2021 by
Rachel and Jareth Tackett. It operates as an INFILL, LLC company and is based in Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania.

We started with a handful of modified printers and grew into a full-service additive
manufacturing operation that handles everything from one-off prototypes to production runs of
thousands. We are not a faceless online service — we work directly and in person with local
businesses, startups, hobbyists and creators in the Pittsburgh area, and we ship nationwide.

Our cloud printing service is priced only on the amount of filament and machine time a print
consumes. Our background in product development and computer aided drafting lets us produce
3D models at a more competitive price than many dedicated modeling services.

Our shop also carries products from local Pittsburgh hobbyist printers through a vendor
marketplace, and we are always looking for more local makers to join.

## Services in full

### Custom 3D printing on demand
Find a file anywhere — online, such as Thingiverse, or your own design — and send it to us.
We print it using the best material and technique for the project and either ship it to you or
arrange a pickup. This is the quickest way to get custom 3D prints close to home.

### 3D scanning and Scan-to-CAD
Need to duplicate a complex part you own but have no drawing for? We scan physical objects
into digital files ready for printing. Our Scan-to-CAD service produces precise STEP files
suitable for manufacturing or further modification.

### CAD design from scratch
Have an idea but no file, and you cannot find the thing anywhere? Our team creates custom CAD
designs from nothing. You receive the finished print plus the original design file we created
and all licensing associated with it — the design is yours.

### Rapid prototyping
3D printing puts functional prototypes in your hands fast, in days rather than weeks. Choose
economical materials for quick design iterations, or premium finishes when the part has to
impress investors or customers. With our in-house print farm we can produce prototypes for
testing before you commit to tooling and mass manufacturing.

### Batch and small-run production
Need 50 parts? 5,000? Our print farm handles batch runs of any size with consistent quality
and no retooling cost. Runs of 10 to 100+ units are routine for startups and small businesses.
There is no minimum order. Contact us for volume pricing and turnaround estimates.

### Signage and displays
3D printed signs are colorful, durable and hard to ignore. We match your brand colors and
materials, and we offer lighted signage options.

### Product development
Have an idea for a new product but do not know where to start — a custom enclosure for a
startup's electronic gadget, or a unique tool for the shop? Our team has created custom
products for clients large and small, and can take you from concept through prototype to
batch production.

## BigPAM — our large format printer

BigPAM is a one-of-a-kind, custom-built, large format FDM 3D printer.

- **Build volume:** 800 x 800 x 900 mm — nearly three feet in every direction, over 2.5 square
  feet of build area.
- **Extrusion rate:** 75 mm3/s, a large jump from typical low-detail rates around 20 mm3/s.
- **Nozzle diameter:** up to 3.0 mm thanks to that extrusion rate, drastically reducing print
time. Nozzles range from 0.4 mm to 3.0 mm.
- **Materials:** PLA for prototyping, PETG-CF for general engineering purposes.
- **Hot end:** custom build combining a Mosquito Magnum Plus with a Bondtech LGX Pro extruder,
a high-resolution nozzle camera, custom-designed cooling ducts, and an integrated bed
leveling probe for advanced mesh creation and layer adhesion.
- **Multi-material unit:** 8 individual filament channels. Print in up to 8 colors at once, or
load 8 x 3 kg spools of the same filament for up to 24 kg of continuous material without a
manual spool swap. Also runs specialty filaments such as breakaway support material, which
leaves no visual marks on the finished print.
- **AI print monitoring:** long prints are watched in real time by cameras and failure-detection
software so problems are caught and corrected before the job is lost.

Larger extrusion lines mean faster prints and stronger parts: the increased layer thickness
from a large nozzle improves structural integrity compared with standard nozzle sizes. BigPAM
suits large-scale rapid prototyping and strong end-use parts.

Typical BigPAM customers: machine shops, automotive, medical, construction, startups, art and
decor, and energy.

## Post-processing

We offer post-processing to finish parts properly — sanding, smoothing, sculpting, painting
and sealing, plus heat-set inserts and even adding lights and automation to finished objects.

## Print farm and general capability

- Multi-printer FDM farm using both custom-built machines and production-grade equipment,
running around the clock on parallel jobs.
- Production printers reach speeds over 500 mm/s without sacrificing quality, with tuned
profiles per material for dimensional accuracy and clean surface finish.
- Hotend temperatures up to 310 C with enclosed build chambers, which puts engineering-grade
materials — carbon fiber nylon, polycarbonate, glass fiber composites — within range.

## Materials in detail

### PLA — most popular
Made from plant-based materials such as cornstarch. The most popular 3D printing filament.
Smooth surface finish with vibrant colors, eco-friendly and biodegradable. Ideal for
prototypes, models and decorative prints. We use Polymaker PolyTerra PLA for quality and
sustainability.

### PETG — best all-rounder
Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol. A step up from PLA: more rigid, better impact resistance,
polished glossy finish, good chemical and moisture resistance. Nearly as easy to print as PLA
but significantly tougher. Great for functional parts and outdoor use.

### TPU — flexible and durable
Thermoplastic Polyurethane produces rubber-like parts that can be pushed, pulled, flexed and
put under friction with minimal wear. Heat-resistant and impact-absorbing. Typical uses:
castor wheels, seals, gaskets, drive belts, protective cases, phone bumpers, shoe soles.

### Nylon composites — industrial grade
Polyamide blends (PA6, PA6.6, PA12) infused with carbon fiber or glass fiber for maximum
structural integrity. Carbon fiber nylon gives high impact, heat and wear resistance; glass
fiber nylon suits high-temperature and electrical applications. Exceptional structural
rigidity and dimensional stability. Our strongest and most heat-resistant materials, for
industrial and engineering end-use parts.

### Choosing a material
- **Visual and display** — appearance matters most: PLA for a matte finish, PETG for gloss.
- **Functional parts** — needs to flex, absorb impact or resist friction: TPU for rubber-like
  flexibility, PETG for rigid durability.
- **Industrial and engineering** — high heat, high impact or load-bearing: nylon composites
reinforced with carbon or glass fiber.

Not sure? Tell us what you are building and we will recommend the right material for strength,
flexibility, heat resistance and finish.

### Filament partners
We work specifically with Polymaker filaments for consistent quality across every print, from
eco-friendly PolyTerra PLA through their high-performance engineering materials. We also stock
specialty filaments from other top manufacturers to cover every use case — just ask.

## 3D printed ultrasounds and lithophanes

### 3D ultrasound models
Most elective ultrasounds are done in 3D, and most mainstream sonogram machines can output the
file types needed for 3D printing. We turn those files into a to-scale, highly detailed printed
replica — a keepsake that lets parents hold their 20-week baby and see the details of the face
and hands. Every file goes through digital post-processing, sculpting away excess that should
not appear in the final print; this is included in the price.

How it works:
1. Book an elective 3D ultrasound. Private clinics are best — tell them ahead of time you need
a special file type for 3D printing.
2. Ask your provider for the 3D source files. STL or DICOM both work; we handle conversion.
3. Bring a flash drive or memory card to the appointment, since 3D files are large.
4. Email us and we will send upload instructions. Then we sculpt and print the keepsake.

### Ultrasound lithophanes
Lithophanes are 3D printed images that reveal themselves when lit from behind. We turn ordinary
2D sonogram photos into them — hang in a window, place near a lamp, or build into a printed
light box. Two steps: get the .JPEG images you already receive at any routine or elective
ultrasound, and email them to us.

### For ultrasound providers
Providers in the greater Pittsburgh area get discounted rates so they can offer this keepsake
to their clients. You perform the ultrasound, export the correct file format, and send it to
us; the client orders through you and you tell us which image to produce. Prints take one to
two weeks, then clients return to you for pickup or we ship directly to them.
